HISTORY - WINTER LEAGUE
Given that this is a ‘senior’ curling league, it is somewhat understandable that no one seems to remember exactly when the Ottawa & District Senior Winter League began play. But, from extensive
in-depth research, this is what we know.
Around the turn of the century (circa 2004?) and in light of the highly successful ODSL Fall League, there was sufficient enthusiasm among those not heading south for the winter to continue with a 12- team competitive yet fun league with a round-robin format. Rod Matheson, the founder of the ODSL, oversaw both the Fall and Winter Leagues until 2016, with support along the way from Bert Callum, Bruce
Lonsbury and then Mark Armstrong. Since then, the league has been run by the Hunt Club’s Curling Coordinator Bill Duck and Rob Kanasy and is now a 20-team cash ladder.
Who won the league in the years before 2012 has, unfortunately, been lost in the mists of time. Beginning in 2012 until 2022, teams in the
Winter League competed for the Bill Roy Memorial Plaque. Bill was former member of the league, a colourful guy who was passionate about the sport of curling. He passed away in 2011 after a struggle with cancer. The trophy was presented to the top team each year, except for 2021 when COVID interrupted league play.
The league continues to provide the opportunity for many senior curlers in the Ottawa region to enjoy competition, exercise and fellowship with players we have come to know so well over the years. The stories are endless and they never grow old, no matter how many times you hear them. Now really, isn’t that what this curling family is all about?

After the most unique finishing week in recent ODSL history, our 2024 Winter League champions are Wayne Holden, Bob Rodney, skip Frank 'The Hat' Van Ryckeghem and Ron Knight.

The happy 2023 Winter League champions: skip Kevin Lemenchick, John Wilson, Ken Wilson and Dave McEwing.

PRE-SEASON LEAGUE
