ODSL Winter League 2024 fees and details

Hello ODSL curlers. Hope you enjoyed a great X-mas.

Here are the last details you'll need for our season start on Thursday the 4th.

We have 20 confirmed teams. They're listed on the website home page and I'll have rosters posted soon.

Entry Fees

The Winter League fee will be $920 per team (for 15 games rather than the Fall's 11), divided as follows:

  • $600 per team for Ice Rental fees

    • Hunt Club teams have already paid their ice fees.

    • teams which include individual Hunt Club members should adjust their overall payment accordingly.

  • $320 from all teams for the prize fund, which will total $6400.

  • 15 teams have roll-over credits from the Fall League to be applied. Those amounts are shown on the Fall final standings document.

  • If you have any questions about the amount owing, please feel free to ask me for confirmation.

  • Chris, Brian L.: I will write to you separately this evening.

Payments

Payments are due on the first Thursday of play, but will be happily accepted beforehand.

  • One payment per team please, by e-transfer or cheque.

  • If paying by e-transfer, make your payment to this address - odsl@bell.net

  • If paying by cheque, make it payable to “Rob Kanasy”.

Per-win dollar values for each game will be included when the schedule is posted in the next few days.

Boots and Shoes

So that salt and grit aren't brought on winter boots into the curling lounge - and then onto the ice - we would ask that curlers enter the building via the main double-door front entrance or - for Men - the Men’s locker room entrance at the south end. Post-game, winter boots are ok in the Willie Park Lounge (i.e. the bar area). If the lounge is empty or there are very few Members there, it will be ok for ODSL teams to enjoy their beverages in the WPL. Another alternative is to pack a pair of clean shoes in your curling bag and continue to convene post-game in the curling lounge as usual.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation in attempting to keep the ice as debris-free as possible during the Ottawa winter.

Enjoy the rest of your holidays and see you all on the 4th.

Canvass for Winter League 2024 entries

Hello ODSL curlers. It's time to start organizing the Winter League. Here are the details we know so far:

  • We'll start January 4th.

  • There will be no curling on February 8 (U-18 Nationals at Hunt Club and R.A.).

  • Ice will be available until April 18 (15 games in total).

  • We'll continue with a ladder format and an even number of teams.

  • We are not asking for entry fees at this time; they'll be payable in January.

  • Anticipate an amount in the ballpark of last year's $820/team (Note: no ice fees for OHC members).

Please let me know by December 21 whether your team is IN for the Winter or will PASS.

If you're IN for the Winter, let me know:

  • your line-up (same as the Fall, or your mix-and-match new list of players).

  • whether you want to roll over your Fall winnings against your Winter fees.

  • if you need to stop after March 28 (i.e. play 12 games, with a reduced fee).

We'll attempt to accommodate any '12-games-only' teams as long as there is an even number taking this option.

For individuals, let me know if you're looking for a team or wish to be listed as a spare.

Please feel free to share this invite with seniors (50+) who you feel would be interested in entering a team or as individuals, because we have the capacity to add beyond last year's 16 Winter League teams. .

ODSL Fall League fees, payments, schedule for the 12th, brush heads, etc.

Hello ODSL Fall League curlers. Here are the last details you'll need for our season start on Thursday the 12th.

Schedule

The schedule has been posted on the Fall page of the web-site. https://ottawacurling.wixsite.com/ottawaseniorleague/fall-league

Entry Fees / Payments
The Fall League fee will be $720 per team for 11 games (Oct. 12 to Dec. 21), divided as follows:

  • $280 from all teams for the prize fund, which will total $6720.

  • $440 per team for Ice Rental fees:

    • teams which are entirely made up of Hunt Club members (e.g. Johnston, Duck, Cassidy) have already paid their ice fee.

    • teams which include individual players who are Hunt Club members (e.g. Team Long with Andre Lalonde) should adjust their ice fee accordingly.

Payment needs to be made between now and the 12th by e-transfer or in person on the 12th by cheque. Please, no cash.

  • One payment per team

  • If paying by e-transfer, make your payment to this address - odsl@bell.net

  • If paying by cheque, make it payable to “Rob Kanasy”.

Per-win dollar values for each game this season have already been included in the schedule.

Brush Heads

As we're a rental league at Hunt Club, we need to be mindful not to damage the ice for further club play Thursday after we have finished our draws. Accordingly, brush heads that have incorporated waterproofing agents or HardLine heads with plastic inserts should not be used, as they scrape more than polish the pebble. If in doubt about your brush head, please ask Bill.

Game Start
Although the early draw is listed as starting at 9:30, the ice will be ready beforehand, so please begin early if your teams are ready. Remember that no end may commence after 11:25*, unless you are tied. If so, play an extra end to determine a winner.

The same is true for the noon draw. Please don't hesitate to begin play if your sheet has been prepared and is ready to go. For this draw, no end may commence after 1:55*. Again, if it's a tie, play an extra end.

Deliberate slow play to achieve victory will not be tolerated.

Please record your game result on the scoresheet in the curling lounge. The league web-site will be updated - usually each Thursday night or Friday morning - with standings and the next week's match-ups.

Club Policy
Hunt Club has a “no cash” policy. Refreshment purchases at the bar will be Debit or Credit (or Member Chit) only. Remember as well that all prices always include the gratuity.

Please welcome our new league members and good luck this season.

ODSL plans for Fall 2023 - team confirmations needed by June 8

Hello ODSL curlers. I hope that you've all been out and about this long weekend, enjoying our spring.

We're writing to you today to ask for team commitments for the 2023 Fall League.

Our plan has always been to return to the pre-COVID league format of 24 teams - up from 20 last year - with full six-sheet 9:30 and noon draws. Bill has mapped out the Hunt Club calendar and our first game is slotted in for Thursday, October 12, with at least some possibility that we could start October 5. There are no planned weeks off, so we're looking at an 11 (or possibly 12) game ladder running through to December 21.

We're writing earlier than usual because of the amount of serious interest that's already been expressed to enter new teams in the Fall. In fact, we'd fill the 24 slots and would have to establish a waiting list to account for all of the interest conveyed to date.

To give potential new teams a clear - and early - picture of their standing, it's now time for existing teams/skips (from last Fall or Winter) to confirm whether they're IN or OUT for this coming Fall.

Please let me know by Thursday, June 8, and please also include your 2023 line-up (CC'ing them with your reply is easiest). Note that we're not asking for entry fees at this time; they'll be payable in October.

Once we've received all of your confirmations, we'll be able to let those teams interested in joining for the Fall know where they stand.

Cheers,

Rob and Bill

January 26 ODSL games cancelled

Hello ODSL Winter League curlers. While we're not ones to bow to the weather easily:

  • the snowstorm is more intense than forecast;

  • the roads are already very messy;

  • it's predicted to continue snowing through 7:15 tomorrow AM.

Given all of the above, Thursday's action will be cancelled. As there is also no curling on February 2, we'll play tomorrow's games when we return February 9.

Please confirm this news with your team and any spares.
The web-site will be updated to reflect this change in the schedule and all of the appropriate financial adjustments will be made.

You can't argue with Mother Nature.

ODSL 50/25/25 on Dec. 22

As we mentioned on Monday, ODSL members Brian Lewis and Dave Stanley won the CurlON Master’s Championship this past weekend. They'll be representing Ontario in the Canadian Masters, April 2nd – 9th at the Thistle-St. Andrews Curling Club in Saint John, NB.

With this honour comes the cost. The team will not receive funding from any organization for this event.

We would like to propose, as a League, that we assist Team Ontario. To that end, we will be holding a 50/25/25 draw tomorrow – our last Thursday of this schedule. Tickets would be $10. (Bring your cash please). The aim is to make the tickets available up to 11:45 am - between games - with the draw made by Brian Lewis along with the Rod Matheson Memorial Trophy presentation.

Update

Hello ODSL curlers. Quick update.

  • The club has asked that we use the curling lounge for our post-game socializing going forward, due to holiday activities in the main lounge. Bonus: the curling lounge is warmer now too.

  • The club has also asked that we remind players about the dress code: https://ottawahuntclub.org/guest-information/

    • Specifically:

      • No ‘T’ shirts.

      • Shirts with a collar.

      • Shirts tucked in.

      • Jeans are ok, no rips.

      • No hats in the warm areas.

      • Shoes must be worn; no socks.

Good curling tomorrow.

Game time policy - quick update

Hello ODSL curlers. There have been a few queries recently about the game time policy, so a quick update seems in order.

Early draw

  • First rocks should be sliding by 9:30am.

  • Early starts are ok!

  • No end should commence once the digital clock in the rink reaches 11:25am UNLESS:

    • the game is tied. If so, play a full end to break the tie.

Late draw

  • Ice is ready when the hacks are back in and the NUMBERS are down

  • We ask that you stay in the lounge until the ice is ready.

  • If your sheet is still occupied due to an extra end in an early draw game, please feel free to use whichever sheet is free and ready for play.

  • First rocks should be sliding by noon

  • Early starts are ok!

  • No end should commence once the digital clock in the rink reaches 1:55pm UNLESS:

    • the game is tied. If so, play a full end to break the tie.

    • your game start was slightly delayed. If so, add the time that skips agreed at the beginning of the game to compensate.

The draw sheet also highlights the end of game times. Given these generous time limits, all games should be able to play 8 ends if necessary. And no team should ever 'slow-walk' to a victory.
